Alexis has served as the Communications Director for House Democratic Leader Tom Sawyer since May 2021, overseeing the Leader’s communications and media relations. She manages the House Democrats’ social media pages and assists with recruitment and fundraising.
She is originally from Wichita and a proud graduate of USD 259’s Wichita High School East. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a focus in Women’s and Gender Studies from Washburn University. While at Washburn, Alexis interned with the Kansas Attorney General’s Office where she was exposed to the intricacies of the Gannon school finance case. She left the AG’s office to intern with Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley during the 2016 legislative session, and later worked for Little Government Relations in the 2017 session. She was elected Student Body President at Washburn for the 2017-2018 school year.
After graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C. for her master’s degree in American Politics and Government with an emphasis in Lobbying and Ethics from American University. In Washington, she worked with the nationally recognized Women & Politics Institute training women to run for office and writing the widely circulated WeLead Newsletter. Additionally, she interned at Ichor Strategies doing DE&I consulting, community influencer identification, and policy briefs for Fortune 500 companies.
After moving back to Kansas in 2020, Alexis worked for Progressive Turnout Project, ran communications for a state House race, and worked as a committee assistant for the Transportation and Public Safety Budget Committee in the Kansas legislature. She was also an Emily’s List Ignite Change Fellow and a member of the 2021 Leadership Kansas Emerging Leaders class.
In her free time Alexis loves a poignant documentary, working on home improvement projects, and spending time with her two cats, Eva and Pippa.
